VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Vicksburg Warren School District (VWSD) is reaffirming its commitment to providing students with college-ready and career-focused opportunities by renewing its partnership with Alcorn State University for dual credit courses and establishing a new agreement with Vicksburg Healthcare, LLC.
For more than five years, VWSD and Alcorn State University have collaborated to offer students dual credit opportunities, allowing them to earn college credit while still in high school. The VWSD Board of Trustees recently approved the continuation of this partnership, ensuring that students—particularly those in the district’s Biomedical Science program—will have access to advanced coursework at no additional cost.
Through this agreement, students in the Biomedical Science program will be able to earn eight dual credit hours in General Biology I and General Biology II. By participating in these courses, students can reduce future college expenses and gain valuable experience in higher education while still in a supportive high school environment.
In addition to expanding dual credit opportunities, VWSD has entered into a Student Apprenticeship Agreement (SAA) with Vicksburg Healthcare, LLC. This agreement will allow VWSD students to job shadow current practitioners at Merit Health, gaining firsthand insight into hospital operations and patient care. As part of this partnership, VWSD will also establish an onsite classroom at Merit Health, where students will receive instruction from a VWSD employee and gain exposure to medical equipment and industry practices through Merit Health representatives.
“The partnerships with Alcorn State University and Vicksburg Healthcare reflect our district’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond high school,” said VWSD Superintendent Dr. Toriano Holloway. “These opportunities provide students with valuable college credit and real-world experience in the healthcare field, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed for their future careers.”
The collaboration between VWSD and its community partners demonstrates an ongoing effort to create innovative educational experiences that bridge the gap between academics and workforce readiness. By providing students with direct exposure to college-level coursework and hands-on learning in professional settings, VWSD continues to pave the way for student success in both higher education and the workforce.
