2024 VWSD Spelling Bee Champs

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Vicksburg-Warren School District (VWSD) showcased its commitment to academic excellence last Friday, January 17, 2025, at the Annual District-Wide Spelling Bee, hosted at Bowmar Avenue Elementary by the Vicksburg Warren Curriculum and Instruction Department. The event brought together 32 students from across the district, representing all grade levels and schools, in a thrilling display of spelling mastery, focus, and determination.

The spelling bee featured participants from elementary, middle, and junior high schools within the VWSD, highlighting the district’s diverse talent pool. Each student demonstrated impressive preparation and a passion for learning as they tackled increasingly challenging words in front of an enthusiastic audience of parents, teachers, and community members.

Top Spellers Shine

After several intense rounds, the district crowned its top three spellers:

1st Place: Megan Holman, an 8th grader from the Academy of Innovation

2nd Place: Malcolm Lewis, a 5th grader from Bowmar Avenue Elementary

3rd Place: Norberto Nadal-Troche, an 8th grader from the Academy of Innovation

Megan Holman earned the championship title after confidently spelling her way through a dramatic final round. As an 8th grader, Megan’s victory is a testament to her dedication to academic excellence and her ability to remain composed under pressure.

Malcolm Lewis, a standout 5th grader from Bowmar Avenue Elementary, secured second place with an impressive performance that showcased his spelling skills at such a young age. Rounding out the top three was Norberto Nadal-Troche, Megan’s classmate at the Academy of Innovation, who also delivered an outstanding performance.

Advancing to the Semifinals

The top three spellers will now advance to the regional semi-finals, where they will represent VWSD. With their talent and determination, they have an opportunity to advance further and compete in the prestigious state-level spelling bee.

“Having 32 students from all grade levels participate this year is a reflection of the enthusiasm and academic excellence we strive to foster in our district,” said Dr. Toriano Holloway, superintendent of VWSD. “We are incredibly proud of Megan, Malcolm, Norberto, and all the students who participated. Their achievements inspire us to continue providing opportunities for students to excel."

Community Support and Recognition

VWSD extends heartfelt gratitude to all 32 participants for their dedication to preparation and to the parents, teachers, and coaches who supported them throughout the competition. Special thanks go to Bowmar Avenue Elementary for hosting this year’s event and to local sponsors who contributed to its success.

The VWSD District-Wide Spelling Bee is more than just an academic competition. It is a celebration of literacy, critical thinking, and public speaking skills, which are vital for student success both in school and in life.

“The spelling bee represents the best of what our district has to offer: students who are eager to learn and a community that supports their growth,” said Dr. Holloway. “We look forward to seeing Megan, Malcolm, and Norberto shine in the next phase of the competition."

Looking Ahead

As the top three spellers prepare for the semi-finals, the VWSD community is proud to stand behind them, cheering them on as they represent the district. These young scholars are a testament to the potential and talent within VWSD schools.
