VICKSBURG, MS – Cameron Pollard, a senior at Vicksburg High School, has been honored as one of the November recipients of the Alderman Mayfield Award for Zeal and Excellence. This prestigious award recognizes his leadership and contributions to ministry within the Vicksburg community.
Pollard, who serves as Student Council President and is actively involved in numerous school and community organizations, was surprised by the recognition. “It feels amazing,” he said in an interview. “I never expected to receive something of this magnitude, especially from the city. It’s a great honor.”
The award, named after the late Alderman Michael Mayfield Sr., celebrates individuals committed to excellence and leadership in Vicksburg. Receiving the accolade from Alderman Thomas “TJ” Mayfield, the late alderman’s son, held special significance for Pollard.
As a young leader, Pollard has made significant contributions to his school and community. In addition to leading the Student Council, he is the section leader in the Pride of Vicksburg High School Band, Key Club Leader, and the chairperson of the Youth Development Center’s Youth Advisory Board. He is also an inaugural member of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of Central Mississippi.
Pollard credits his commitment to excellence to the mentorship of administrators like Dr. Latoya Allen and his parents, who instilled in him the values of respect and service. “I’ve always had a passion for things to be perfect,” Pollard said. “Excellence has always been my goal.”
Despite his achievements, Pollard acknowledges the challenges of leadership, including overcoming self-doubt. “As leaders, our worst critics are often ourselves,” he shared. He emphasized the importance of learning from mistakes and striving to turn private victories into public ones.
Looking ahead, Pollard aspires to make an even greater impact. “My goal is to turn the world upside down,” he explained, describing his mission to inspire others, bring people to Christ, and encourage young leaders to pursue excellence.
Pollard’s advice to other young people seeking to make a difference? “Be yourself. You can never achieve greatness trying to be somebody else.”
The Vicksburg community will honor Pollard on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 10 a.m. during a Board of Aldermen meeting at City Hall. The event will recognize his exceptional contributions and celebrate his leadership achievements.
For Pollard, the recognition is both humbling and motivating. “As a leader, you must be able to follow and serve. This award reminds me to keep striving for excellence while uplifting others along the way.”
