On Day 2 of School Bus Safety Week, Vicksburg Warren School District (VWSD) is focusing on the importance of safe boarding and exiting practices for students. One of the most critical moments during school transportation is when students are getting on and off the bus, which is why VWSD is taking extra steps to educate students about the proper procedures.
VWSD Transportation Director, Kimberly Taylor, emphasized the significance of teaching students to stay alert and aware around the bus. "The most dangerous part of the bus ride is getting on and off the bus, especially when students cross the street. We want to make sure that all students follow safe practices, like making eye contact with the driver, using handrails, and staying clear of the bus’s 'danger zone'—the area within 10 feet of the bus."
Key Safety Reminders for Boarding and Exiting the Bus:
Wait for the Driver’s Signal: Students should always wait for a clear signal from the bus driver before boarding or crossing in front of the bus.
Use the Handrails: To avoid slipping or falling, students should use the handrails when getting on or off the bus.
Avoid the Danger Zone: Stay 10 feet away from the bus on all sides and never walk behind the bus.
Cross in Front: If crossing the street is necessary, always cross in front of the bus where the driver can see you.
VWSD is encouraging parents to talk with their children about these practices and reinforce the importance of following bus rules. Community members are also reminded to be vigilant when driving near school buses, particularly during pick-up and drop-off times.
By making safe boarding and exiting a priority, VWSD continues its efforts to protect students during National School Bus Safety Week.
