Vicksburg Warren School District partners with United Way and MDE for an Exciting Literacy Event
The United Way of West Central Mississippi recently hosted a dynamic and engaging event, "Tailgating for Literacy: A Game Day Celebration for Young Readers," that brought the excitement of football together with the joy of reading. Held in partnership with United Way of West Central Mississippi, Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, and the Excel by 5 Coalition, designed specifically for Pre-K through 3rd grade students and their families! The event aimed to spark a love for reading among young students while involving the community in a fun-filled evening.
The event, which took place on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, transformed the Ardis T. Williams Sr. Auditorium into a lively tailgating atmosphere, games, and school spirit. Families, students, and community members joined together to celebrate literacy in an environment that merged education with football-themed fun.
Dr. Tori Holloway, Superintendent of VWSD, expressed the district's excitement about the event. "We are thrilled to have such strong support from our community and partners. Events like these show our commitment to fostering a love of reading in our students, and we're proud to make it fun and exciting for them."
Students participated in interactive reading sessions, and literacy games, and received free books to take home as part of the district's initiative to promote reading beyond the classroom. Volunteers from the United Way of West Central Mississippi and MDE provided hands-on support, creating a welcoming and enriching environment for children of all ages.
“We’re thrilled to bring our community together to celebrate literacy in such a fun way,”
said Virginia Campbell, Excel by 5. “This event not only promotes reading but also
fosters a sense of community and excitement for learning.”
"Tailgating for Literacy" reflects VWSD's mission to improve literacy rates and engage the community in educational success. With such overwhelming positive feedback, the district looks forward to continuing this annual event and inspiring even more young readers in the future.
