Teachers and principal gather outside Bovina Elementary school

After an illustrious career spanning more than 20 years, Dr. Katrina “Mikki” McCann has announced her retirement, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, compassion, and transformative leadership at Bovina Elementary School.

Dr. McCann began her journey as a passionate young student teacher in 1997 at Redwood Elementary School. She quickly rose through the ranks, earning recognition for her innovative teaching methods and genuine care for her students and staff. Over the years, she became a beacon of inspiration, impacting the lives of countless students and colleagues alike.

Since the reopening of Bovina Elementary School in 2008, Dr. McCann has led the Lighthouse school with unwavering commitment. Under her leadership, the school achieved numerous accolades, including academic excellence and community engagement initiatives. Her vision of creating a nurturing environment where every student could thrive became the foundation of the school's culture.

Beyond the accomplishments, it’s her personal connections that stand out the most. Former students often return to visit, crediting her for their successes, while staff members speak of her as a mentor and friend who was always there to guide and support them.

Reflecting on her career, Dr. McCann shared, "It’s been an incredible journey. I’ve had the privilege of working with extraordinary students, talented educators, and a supportive community. Watching our students grow and succeed has been the greatest reward."

Though she is retiring, her influence will undoubtedly continue to shape the school for years. Dr. McCann plans to begin a new chapter with AmeriCorps.

Since Bovina Elementary’s reopening, kindergarten teacher Alisa Harvey has been under Dr. McCann's leadership. Harvey reflects, “The biggest thing is she supports her staff and teachers. She has always had our backs when it comes to us. As an individual, she helps us focus on the main goal. She is going to be missed.”

A legacy built on a strong foundation, Bovina counselor Jana Moore, who has worked at the school for 16 years, shares, “She has pushed me personally, spiritually, and professionally. I’m a better person because of her leadership.”

As Dr. McCann embarks on this new chapter, she leaves behind a school that is stronger, kinder, and more united because of her leadership. Bovina Elementary School and the Vicksburg Warren School District will forever be grateful for her service and the indelible mark she has left on the community.
