Vicksburg, MS - Dana Road Elementary celebrated being named one of six Emerging Science of Reading Schools by the Mississippi Department of Education on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. MDE states that “this designation is for schools that have trained teachers in the science of reading, exemplified a change of instructional practices, and embodied a school culture that focuses on building skillful, strong readers in kindergarten through third grade”.

Dana Road Elementary has achieved a significant milestone by being designated as an Emerging Science of Reading School by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). This prestigious recognition reflects the school’s commitment to enhancing literacy instruction and ensuring that every student builds a strong foundation in reading.

Representatives from MDE, VWSD, and community partners were present and shared their excitement for Dana Road achieving this incredible designation.

“We are incredibly proud to announce that Dana Road Elementary has been officially designated as an Emerging Science of Reading School by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). This prestigious recognition reflects the dedication and hard work of our teachers, staff, and students in embracing evidence-based literacy instruction rooted in the Science of Reading" said Assistant Principal NaKisha Davis.

The Science of Reading is an evidence-based approach incorporating the latest research on how children learn to read. By implementing these practices, Dana Road Elementary is working to improve student outcomes and foster a culture of literacy that will benefit students for years to come.

Principal Lashonda Keyes expressed pride in the school’s accomplishment, stating, "This designation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, staff, and students. We are committed to providing the highest quality education and ensuring our students have the skills they need to succeed."

The Emerging Science of Reading School designation is a testament to Dana Road Elementary’s commitment to fostering literacy skills that will empower our students throughout their academic journey. Our educators have undergone extensive training and have implemented innovative teaching strategies that align with the latest research on how students learn to read. This achievement not only highlights the exceptional progress being made at Dana Road Elementary, but also serves as an inspiration for all schools within our district.
